2017 Girls Volleyball Tryouts
2017 Girls Volleyball Tryouts
As with anything in life, one cannot measure an outcome without first trying. We encourage anyone who is committed to volleyball to tryout for the Whitehall Girls Volleyball team. Don't look back and say "I wish I would have tried." "Should you fail and love the game, try again, and again." Coach Boulos
Tryouts will take place August 14th - August 16th, starting promptly at 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm for Varsity followed by JV Tryouts until 6:00 pm. Please have your required physicals completed before try-out.
If needed partial cuts will take place daily and on the last day the Varsity and JV teams will be announced. Please keep in mind that we will be making difficult decisions that will impact you and the program. The end result is not personal, the end result is for the benefit of the team and Whitehall girls' volleyball program. We will consider the short-term as well as the long-term benefits and needs of the program.

What coaches are looking for
Leadership:
Coaches will check to see if you demonstrate leadership by your example, your work ethic and hustle. “This is very, very important. Leadership also ties into volleyball IQ: whether you know what’s going on the court so you can help direct traffic and organize what is going on during a drill or scrimmage. “Do you have the ability to make people around you better by doing what you do?”
Coachability:
You will need to demonstrate that you are willing to try new things -- to change technique or adapt rather than being set in your ways. We are looking for a player who can correct her approach and take criticism. Some players have skills and athletic ability, but they don’t want to change.

Communication:
Coaches will look for somebody who is vocal, energetic and encouraging with teammates. Moreover, we will also look for the allied skills of court vision and volleyball IQ, which involves critical thinking and problem solving. There’s a difference between talking -- such as calling for the ball or shouting “Got it got it”-- and communicating, which involves passing along information as you assess the game, such as how a rival player serves, that helps the team. While the best athlete is the quickest and highest jumping, the best volleyball player also displays a strong volleyball IQ. We at Whitehall will blend both types of players.

Athleticism:
Coaches will look for speed, agility and movement, as well all-important footwork. We also will look at the player’s build, seeking a good strength base. We look for coordination, and what type of flexibility you have. Coaches will key on athleticism even more so than technique and skills, because if the tryout candidate is not a really good athlete, the game becomes a lot harder. Particularly with our sport, because there is so much jumping, coaches will look at how high you can jump and how high above the net you can play.
Final note:
Please remember our philosophy of "Commitment","Trust", and "Respect".
You are always representing Whitehall Girls Volleyball and those three elements are a requirement for trying out. The coaching staff and Whitehall, wish everyone a safe and healthy off-season and all the luck during try outs
Thank You
